This week, we’re excited to launch a new monthly feature in our newsletter—Caregiver Highlights, where we shine a spotlight on one of the incredible team members who make Hope Senior Home Care the compassionate, trusted agency it is.
We are proud to begin this series with someone who embodies the true meaning of caregiving: Phyllis.
A Lifetime of Caring
Phyllis began her caregiving journey in 1979, working in a nursing home, and she has been part of the Hope family since 2014. Her passion for caring for seniors comes from a deeply personal place. Years ago, Phyllis faced the difficult decision of placing her own mother in a facility—something she had promised she would never do. That experience shaped her belief that “the best place to be is always in your home,” and it’s why she believes home care aides are so essential.
Phyllis says that what makes an exceptional caregiver isn’t skill alone—it’s heart.
“A good caregiver has a compassionate heart. If you’re in it just for the money, you won’t succeed and you won’t last.”
Serving Beyond the Job
Phyllis’s caring spirit extends far beyond her workday. Once a month, she volunteers with a group that provides meals to those experiencing homelessness at outdoor stations. She also crochets scarves to help keep people warm during the winter. On top of that, she participates in a remarkable project: transforming grocery plastic bags into durable mats for the homeless.
Keeping Clients Engaged, Active & Smiling
One of the things that makes Phyllis exceptional is her belief in keeping clients engaged, no matter their condition.
She often involves clients in her crochet projects—her current client, Ted, helps her ball up yarn as they share stories and conversation.
With another client who is living with dementia, Phyllis uses games to spark joy and connection. They love to play cards together, and when he wins, he earns a special treat: ice cream. According to Phyllis, “he wins frequently!”
It’s these small but meaningful moments that create purpose, dignity, and happiness.
